University hosts inaugural gathering of AAAS Fellows
LAWRENCE — On Nov. 17, the University of Kansas celebrated its 33 faculty members elected as Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). This inaugural gathering brought KU’s AAAS Fellows, university leaders and research administrators together to facilitate conversation about future research potential and strengthen collaborations across all KU campuses.
The event, organized by Robin Lehman, director of faculty recognition and awards, featured remarks from Shelley Hooks, vice chancellor for research; Matthias Salathe, chief research officer and senior vice chancellor for research; Barbara Bichelmeyer, provost and executive vice chancellor, and Candan Tamerler, associate vice chancellor for research and AAAS Fellow.
“Mobilizing this group of scientists is an important effort in helping to achieve KU’s collective vision and goals for research,” Salathe said. “We encourage membership in the AAAS to become eligible for nomination as a fellow. Along with this group, the voices and involvement of all our scholars will create the level of energy needed to strategically position KU as an even more outstanding research institution in the years ahead.”
The KU AAAS fellows will continue to convene each semester to:
- Increase awareness of colleagues’ research and explore opportunities for collaboration.
- Exchange information from AAAS, KU leadership and other sources.
- Discuss involvement in national science policy.
- Encourage AAAS membership and future fellow nominations.
About AAAS Fellows
