KU Jazz sets record at DownBeat Student Music Awards
LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas Jazz and Commercial Music program has earned national recognition with a record-setting eight honors in the 49th Annual DownBeat Student Music Awards. The 2026 awards mark the most DownBeat Student Music Awards KU has received in a single year, underscoring the program’s continued excellence and reinforcing its reputation as one of the nation’s premier university jazz and commercial music programs.
The DownBeat Student Music Awards are widely regarded as the most prestigious awards in jazz and contemporary music education, often referred to as the “Grammy Awards for student musicians.” Each year, ensembles and individuals from around the world submit recordings for blind evaluation by a panel of world-renowned jazz musicians. Entries are judged on musicality, creativity and technical excellence.
“We are extremely proud of the continued success of our students in national/international competitions like the DownBeat Awards,” said Dan Gailey, chair of jazz and commercial music at KU. “This recognition is a result of their hard work and the world-class instruction and mentoring they receive from faculty in the KU School of Music.”
2026 DownBeat Award recipients:
- KU Jazz Ensemble I: Outstanding Performance, Best Large Jazz Ensemble — Graduate Division (fifth award in the past six years)
- KU Jazz Singers: Outstanding Performance, Best Large Vocal Jazz Ensemble — Graduate Division (third consecutive year)
- Heidi Lanita: Outstanding Vocal Jazz Soloist in Best Large Vocal Jazz Ensemble — Graduate Division
- Josie Jones: Outstanding Vocal Jazz Soloist in Best Large Vocal Jazz Ensemble — Graduate Division
- Free State Bones: Outstanding Performance, Best Small Jazz Ensemble — Graduate Division
- Keegan Kaiser Ensemble: Outstanding Performance, Best Small Jazz Ensemble — Undergraduate Division
- Keegan Kaiser: Winner, Best Live Engineered Recording — Graduate Division (second consecutive year receiving an award in this category)
- John Fraka: Winner, Best Blues/Pop/Rock Soloist — Undergraduate Division (second consecutive year receiving an award in this category)
