KU announces new acting leaders in the Office of Sovereign Partnerships & Indigenous Initiatives and the Indigenous Studies Program
LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas has named new acting leaders in the Office of Sovereign Partnerships & Indigenous Initiatives and the Indigenous Studies Program to account for the temporary reassignment of KU leader Alex Red Corn.
Following the recent Intergovernmental Personnel Act appointment of Red Corn — KU’s associate vice chancellor for sovereign partnerships & Indigenous initiatives and director of the Indigenous Studies program — as temporary president of Haskell Indian Nations University, KU has named Melissa Peterson as acting associate vice chancellor for the Office of Sovereign Partnership & Indigenous Initiatives, effective immediately.
Peterson brings extensive experience in Indigenous-serving initiatives, institutional leadership and cross-sovereign partnerships. She will continue advancing KU’s commitments to Native Nations, students and communities during this transition period.
“I am honored to step into this role and to continue working alongside colleagues, partners and Native Nations during this time,” Peterson said. “Our focus remains on sustaining strong relationships, supporting Indigenous students and scholars, and ensuring that this work continues with intention, respect and care.”
In addition, KU faculty members Ward Lyles and Joseph Brewer will assume acting co-director responsibilities for the Indigenous Studies Program, which is housed within the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Together they will support the program by contributing to academic direction, faculty coordination and overall program continuity. Their collaborative approach reflects the program’s shared governance model and commitment to faculty strengths.
“The Indigenous Studies Program is grounded in collaboration, community and academic excellence,” said Ben Eggleston, senior associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. “Professor Lyles’ leadership, supported by Professor Brewer’s experience and commitment, ensures continuity for our students and faculty while honoring the values that guide this important program.”
Together, these leadership updates reflect KU’s commitment to thoughtful stewardship and collaboration during a period of transition. KU remains focused on sustaining strong partnerships, supporting sovereignty, and advancing institutional responsibilities with care and respect.
“Haskell Indian Nations University is in good hands under the interim leadership of Alex Red Corn,” said KU Chancellor Douglas. A Girod. “Additionally, our acting leadership appointments here at KU reflect both continuity and care during a moment of important transition for our university. We are deeply grateful to Alex for his leadership and partnership, and we are confident in Melissa Peterson, Ward Lyles and Joseph Brewer as they guide this work forward with integrity, collaboration and a deep commitment to excellence.”
