Accessibility Requirements As a public institution in the State of Kansas, all KU websites are required to comply with the State of Kansas Web Accessibility Requirements . Please review these guidelines for a complete set of requirements, which include:
KU website administrators should ensure that every page on their sites meet the guidelines. If you have questions or concerns, please contact KU Web Services at webservices@ku.edu to request a review of your site.
For more information, see Accessibility
Sitewide Accessibility All content sitewide meets accessibility standards (e.g., images, alt text, links, documents/PDFs, video captions, color contrast, etc.)
For more information, see Accessibility
Accessible Images and Alternative Text All images use quality alternative text to describe the image for accessibility compliance (see exception below for images that are also links).
All images that are also links use the alternative text field to describe where the user will go, not a description of the image itself.
The words “link” or “link to” are not used in alternative text.
For more information, see Images
For more information, see Alternative Text
Accessible Video All videos hosted on the site, including those with little or not talking, provide captions for accessible access.
For more information, see Videos
Accessible Documents and PDFs All documents and PDFs hosted on the site are accessible (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, etc.). To be considered accessible for KU CMS sites, PDFs must have no issues via Adobe Acrobat’s Accessibility Checker tools. This includes issues that are automatically identified by Adobe (e.g., alternative text, tagging, tables, etc.) and the two issues that must be checked manually: 1) Logical reading order; and 2) Color contrast.
Any scanned PDFs on the site have undergone necessary remediation to make them fully accessible. Scanned PDFs are strongly discouraged.
For more information, see Documents
Links All links are properly titled to tell the user the link destination.
There are no links that use non-descript text, such as “Click here” or “this link.”
There are no links on the site that show the actual URL (e.g., https://admissions.ku.edu) instead of a descriptive link explaining the link destination. Exception: Properly formatted bibliographic citations may include URLs as link titles (e.g., selected publications in Person Profiles).
All links open in the same window – unless the link destination is outside the KU domain.
Links should never be empty
For more information, see Links
Headers and Sub-Headers All page titles, headers and sub-headers follow guidelines and best practices.
All pages contain only one H1 header class header.
All pages follow the basic logic for header classes H1, H2, H3. For example, an H3 cannot occur prior to the establishment of an H2.
All headers reflect page organization, not aesthetics.
There are no empty headers on any pages.
For more information, see Headers and Sub-Headers
Color Contrast The meaning of text and graphical elements is communicated with more than just color. For example, avoid statements like “Select the green button to go to the next page.”
