News

Site Administrators and Editors can use the News Page to display topical information for their department in a format that's consistent university-wide. This content can then be aggregated and displayed in a reverse-chronological list, either in the sidebar of any page, or on a dedicated news list/archive page. In addition, news can be "cherry picked" from the University news archive found at news.ku.edu.

To create a new News page:

  1. Log into the CMS
  2. After login you now have the ability to create new or edit content.
    Add/Edit Screenshot

Click the “Add content” option at the top of the page to create a new page

Click the “New draft” option to edit an existing page. Note: Moderate allows you to access previous versions of a page.

  3. Select one of the news options, "News" or "News - Cherry pick a KU News article".
    Select the news option
  4. Enter a page Headline, a date you would like to display with your article, your article's body copy, the author as you'd like it to be displayed, any keywords, corresponding KU strategic inititatives, and your location (i.e., Lawrence).

Although some of these fields will not be displayed on the front end of the site, they may be used later on by you or other users to aggregate similar stories. Please fill out all fields as thoroughly as possible.

Fields:
  • Headline - This is the title for the news article.
  • Date - This is the date that will publicly appear with the news article.
  • Author - This does not appear with the article, but can be used for internal tracking.
  • External URL - OPTIONAL - If you simply are linking to an external news article not found on your site, enter that here.  When a person clicks on this news article, it will automatically direct them to the external URL.
  • Article - This is the main content for your news article.
  • Keywords/tags - Enter in keywords that are relevant to this news article.   This will allow the news item to be aggregated with similarly tagged articles.
  • Submit to KU news - Submitting your news article to the KU News team will give you the added bonus of improving the visibility of your news article. Expert editors in the Department of Public Affairs will review your article, making any necessary changes, and publish it on news.ku.edu. The article will also automatically show up on your site once they have published it, and it will be available for other sites to cherry pick. Public Affairs will contact you with any questions about the article.
  • Location - This does not appear with the article, but can be used for internal tracking.
  • Strategic Initiatives - Check these boxes only if your news article directly relates to one of the strategic initiatives.  Does not appear publicly.
As with all pages created in the CMS, the News Page will be placed into Draft status when saved. You can use the Workbench to change the status to “Published.”

News Listings - in a page

Once you have entered and/or cherry picked some news articles, you can display them in a listing using some specialized code.

  1. Create a new General Content Page
  2. In the Body area, type in:
    [view:news_articles_list=page=news]
  3. Save and publish the page.

Options:
There are several options you can use with news articles. Each option should be appended at the end of the [view] code.

  1. /items_per_page=10 : This will allow you to customize the number of news items you would like to appear per page. Example code:
  2. /show_summary : This will include the summary (or first 200 words) of the news article along with the news listing. Example code:
  3. /show_full: This will include the full article along with the news listing. Example code:
  4. /nopager: This will disable the pager that appears at the bottom of the listing. Example code:

Note: you can use more than one option as well, eg:

News Listings - in a block

A news listing can also be added to your department sidebar as a block. The default way to do this:

  1. Go to "Structure->Blocks"
  2. Under "Disabled", find "KU Departmental News".
  3. Choose the "Unit/dept sidebar" area and arrange as needed..

Alternatively, you can add a new block add insert the following code into the "Block body":

This method also includes the following options:

  1. /no_read_more_link : Removes the "Read more" link at the end of the article listing. Example code:
  2. /read_more_text=some text : Renames the "Read more" link at the end of the article listing. Example code:
  3. /number_of_items=3 : Change the number of news items to be listed in the block. Example code:

Note: you can use more than one option as well, eg:

News Listings - Filtering by keywords

A news listing can also be filtered by the keywords you type in (see above).  For example, if you type in the keyword "faculty" for all of your faculty related news, you can then have a page that lists only faculty news.  This follows the same format as above with the replacement of one word:
[view:news_articles_list=page=mykeyword]

So if the keyword is "faculty", you would use:
[view:news_articles_list=page=faculty]

You can use the same options as listed above as well, eg:
[view:news_articles_list=page=faculty/show_summary]

Note: currently the system only allows listings by a single keyword.
